Heartbeat

Heartbeat….the thing that makes us all the same even though we are vastly different!  It is something that the doctor always checks when we have our yearly exam and something we cover with our hand during unique occasions.

Yesterday Jackie sent a group family text (yes, a family text group…who needs email or for heaven’s sake….a phone call!) that she and Jermar heard the baby’s heartbeat for the first time.  Some might say “of course you hear the heartbeat” but that milestone is just one more step to the realization that inside this woman is a human being….for Jackie and Jermar a BOY creature.  🙂  It is not like “phew, I guess I am really pregnant” because one already knows that.  From feeling urpy the minute you move a muscle in the early dawn hours, to boobs that are sore, to only wanting to eat pickles and peanut butter, to the double lines on the pee stick, to the Jurassic Park looking character in the ultrasound — one already knows well in advance of this heartbeat.  But the heartbeat is unique and amazing.

If you have never heard the heartbeat sound, google it (or call Jermar, I hear he does a great impersonation of the sound)– it is very unique and fast (170-180 beats) – almost like a swishing.  But more than that, it is the unique sound that holds all of us together.  It is the additional understanding of the miracle God has created within the woman’s body.  It is the heart that will beat and carry life for this child, it will be a happy heart at times and a sad heart at times.  But it will be the reminder of how we truly are the same, and unique in our own way.
