Lots to Catch up on….

Looks like the last time I updated this blog, we were in Nebraska, looking at alternate plans since our original planned location was getting snow.  I swear it is just following us!!

Kansas

After looking at the forecast maps, we decided to try to head as south as we could!  Our next destination was a KOA in WaKeeney, Kansas!  We were surprised to see so many oil rigs in Kansas — knew they would be in Texas and Oklahoma, but not necessarily Kansas!

We also found that the road was very flat and very straight.  We could see the road in a straight line far ahead of us.  Kansas also had a lot of wind turbines and the same in Oklahoma.  It is memorizing watching hundreds of wind turbines in a row, almost like a well played symphony!  And the view at night is even more so with the blinking red lights all timed in together!

We decided that still heading south would be our best option — even though all the way to Texas they were talking cold weather!!  😦

Oklahoma

Our next stay was at a very unique campground – Corral Drive-In RV Park in Guymon, Oklahoma!  This had been an abandoned drive-in theatre for almost 20 years and the owners bought it and restored the drive-in and used an old 35mm projector to show the movies.  Then they decided to also add an RV campground section where people could camp and still put their chairs out on the campsite and watch the movie.  The sites were pretty nice, with a good amount of green grass in between.  The drive-in is closed for the season….reason…freezing…LOL, but the campgrounds stay open all year long.  They even wrap the water pipes in a blanket type of wrap that is plugged in to keep the pipes from freezing.  Some of the pics are below!

The night we pulled in we were treated to a beautiful sunset!

When we woke up the next morning, we discovered our twin had pulled in next door to us during the night.  Different Solitude and longhorn RAM, but same colors.  As I stepped out the door in the early morning, I almost did a double take seeing that parked next to us!

We left the next morning again heading south hoping for that illusive warm weather.  First we stopped in Texhoma, a town where half is in Oklahoma and half in Texas at a little diner for breakfast.  We try to stop at unique places to eat, but this one was by far the most unique-est!  🙂  I guess we should have known it may be sketchy when there were no truckers parked there — they were parked down the road at another restaurant.  I guess we should have known better when David poured the cream in his coffee and it came out as one big lump — same thing happened with the other 4 he opened!  We finally asked for some milk to use.  I went to use the bathroom and David said “you are much braver than me!”  It was definitely an experience!

Wedding

Sometimes being a snowbird means you might miss some family events.  On Friday, 10/12, Jermar’s sister, Tell, and RJ got married.  It was a disappointment that we had to miss it because it sounded like everyone had a great time.  The kids did send us pictures once they were all ready to go and they do clean up very nice!  Sorry we missed the great day!

Texas

We then figured where else could we go than Texas — is HAS to be warm there!!   So we headed to Amarillo to the Amarillo RV Park.  As we were heading that way this popped up on our GPS:

TX6

WHAT???  Obviously Texas didn’t know they were supposed to be warmer.  And once we got to Amarillo, this was on my weather app!  TX weather

We were now starting to think that Minnesota might be warmer.

As we were driving, I texted my brother, Richard, so I could tease him about the Texas weather we were heading towards.  Turns out he was also on the road heading from his summer cabin in Minnesota back to his house in San Antonio, TX.  We texted for a while and then he decided to take a detour and come to visit us.  That was such a fun surprise!!  That night we went to dinner at the “famous” Big Texan Steak house, home of the 72 ounce steak.  If you can eat that 72 ounce steak in 1 hour you get it for free!  We did see one guy complete that with 20 minutes to spare.  Here are some pictures from that fun evening.

Richard stayed the night and left after breakfast trying to get ahead of the weather.  It was in the 80’s in San Antonio, but was forecast to get down in the 30’s here in Amarillo that night.  He left and about 2 hours later the sleet started and it was very windy — so much so that it rocked the camper!!  Luckily the Solitude comes with a heated underbelly and also tank heaters for all of the tanks.  So we turned those on later in the evening and hoped for the best.

When we woke up, we had no water.  It was not inside the camper…thankfully, but was the actual campground line outside our camper.  Our water hose was frozen too.  When we went to the office, for their homemade donuts and coffee :-), the maintenance guy said he would stop by.  He was there about 30 minutes later, got the water line freed up and we are good to go.  They are forecasting a low of 28 here tonight, last night was low 20’s, so we just need to turn the water off before bed to help it not freeze again.

One more fun picture to share — our granddaughter, Erin, got the chance to hold Jaxen and he was apparently so relaxed she almost put him right to sleep.  Sounds like a good babysitter in the making!

Hope you all stay warm out there!!
