Cadillac Ranch

Anyone that visits the Amarillo area should try to take the time to at least take a quick peek at Cadillac Ranch.

Located along the famous Route 66, the “art piece” was invented and built by 3 hippie architects from the San Francisco area.  They called themselves the Ant Farm and along with financial backing from millionaire Stanley Marsh III, ten Caddies were half-buried nose first (supposedly at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza), facing west.  It includes a 1949 Club Sedan to a 1963 Sedan de Ville, spanning the generations of the Cadillac line.  This was in 1974 and it was viewed by many people as they drove along this infamous highway.  The artists were tolerant of the addition of new artwork as seen in the pictures.  (Source:  Wikipedia)

As you enter the area, you see the gate that is used to walk out on to the farmer’s cow pasture where the art exhibit is currently available.  (It had been quietly moved to this new location in 1997 since the previous land was becoming too close to the limits of growing Amarillo.)

Even when we were there today, the mild scent of spray paint greeted us as we got close to the site.  There were people adding their artwork to the cars and even to the walkway leading up to the artwork.

It was interesting to see it and be able to say that we saw it in person.  It was not as impressive as I expected it to be, but still was great to see and enjoy!
