Week in Review

Quite a few things have been going on over the last couple of weeks.  First my vertigo is better — at least things are not spinning like they were a couple of weeks ago.  Still have some light headedness, but better than it was.

About a week ago we were coming back to the campgrounds, it was dark and the road is windy.  We saw three creatures cross the road in front of us and thought they were pigs!!  We described what we saw to the park managers and they told us they are javelinas, or peccary or skunk pig.  This is what one looks like — really ugly!!

I am glad we did not get out to see the “little pigs” because these creatures can actually be very mean!!  At least that is what people here were telling us.  I read an article where a woman in Arizona was walking her dog and they were attacked by a pack of these creatures, so I think it is best to not try to make friends with them!

Max was starting to look pretty shaggy so we decided to take him to Sedona at Petsmart for grooming.  While we we waiting for him to be done we were sitting in the parking lot and watched this large birds work hard to try to get the last french fries out of the McDonalds bag that was in the Target cart (or buggy as they say in the south)!

The one would watch the other while it did all the work to get the fries out, and then it would dive bomb in and grab the fry!!  It was quite entertaining while we waited.  And here is Max after his grooming!

Super Bowl Sunday

Last Sunday, the campground put on a Super Bowl party.  They have a huge screen in the Rec Building, which was really nice for viewing the game.  They provided a taco bar, margaritas, beer and everyone brought something to share.  I would say 99% of the people there were cheering for the Rams, which only 1 couple, at our table, were rooting on the Patriots.  They had a chance at numbers for the score of each quarter and also door prizes so it was really a nice gathering.

Oh and I don’t want to forget that this is one of David’s Christmas presents!  🙂  (Max approves too!!)

Prescott/Prescott Valley

We decided to drive over the mountain and go to Prescott Valley for breakfast and then to Prescott to go to one of the city parks.  By the way, Prescott is not pronounced here as we would in the Midwest like when talking about Prescott, Wisconsin.  Here it rhymes with “biscuit” and if you don’t pronounce that way, everyone knows you are an out of towner.

In our quest to find local eateries, we planned to go to Gaby’s Kitchen in Prescott Valley.  Unfortunately, there was an incident that had transpired on the street in front of Gaby’s so it was closed.  We asked one of the police officers standing by the blockade for the road closure and he suggested Back Burner.  It was definitely a home town type of restaurant with home made goodness and large size servings.  We would consider it a “go back to place” if we are in that area again around breakfast.

Oh and as always I did have to check out the restrooms.  This is what was on each door and it took a minute to understand which one I should use….LOL  Interesting??!!

Watson Lake Park

This park is within the city of Prescott.  I had heard that this park included a lake, and being in Arizona, that is kind of a rare sight to see so we were excited to see this phenomenon.   Minnesota may have 10,000+ lakes, but I think you could count on your hands and toes home many Arizona has.

First a little history of Watson Lake Park.  In the early 1900’s, a dam was built on nearby Granite Creek by the Chino Valley irrigation district, creating water reservoirs in and around the Granite Dells. One of these is Watson Lake. The lake is only a few minutes from downtown Prescott and has about 400 surface acres of water. The surrounding granite boulders create spectacular photo opportunities, particularly around calm water.  The Granite Dells area is so photogenic it has seen its share of Western movie shoots. Our first stop was the boat launch so we could venture out on to the dock to get a better view of the water.  There were geese and ducks and one goose that must have thought he was the guardian of the dock because he didn’t want to let us by!!

He (or she) kept spitting at us and I know they can be mean, so we just tried to tell him we were only trying to get out on the dock.  He followed us half the way out there and then just curled up in the sun and napped in the middle of the dock.  My dad used to have his pet geese, and I know they can be mean, so we tried to give him/her as much space as needed.

We then drove up to the scenic overlook and it did not disappoint.  The granite boulders rising up out of the water were really amazing looking.  The day we went it was somewhat chilly, but I could see that this would be a very busy place to get away from the Arizona heat.

This was a park that we would visit again!

Hope everyone is doing well!!  I know the weather in Minnesota has been so crazy — hopefully Spring will be here soon for y’all!!
