Friday Musings

Today is Friday….right?  Not so funny anymore for those of you that WFH full time — just like in retirement, it is hard to remember what day it is??  Sounds like maybe we will be starting to make the turn in the right direction soon — saw MN Governor, Tim Walz is allowing the golf courses to open starting tomorrow!  That will make some people happy, I think.  The courses here stayed open.

Speaking of golf course.  I can watch the golfers from the deck and always have to laugh a little when the stream of expletives come flying out of their mouths when they hit a bad shot.  Maybe it is louder because they are in the valley and we are over looking, but it comes across pretty loud!!

But maybe it is better to swear than to break those sometimes expensive clubs in half??!!  That made me think about swearing.  For some people swearing is as natural as a unspoken comma in a sentence. Is that something they learned from their surroundings, or was it cool to swear at some point in your life and you just continue?  David says swearing is a form of anger release — if he didn’t utter that “word” his blood pressure would go up.  That sounds like a plausible excuse as any!!

I don’t swear a lot, but I think people around me know if I swear, I am really upset!  🙂  My favorite swear statement these days is “Dirty Dog!”….so you can see my swear meter is pretty low.  I remember just after high school (Catholic high school I may add) I went through the F word phrase!!  The F word was in every sentence and it seemed as natural as could be.  Funny I remember starting the phase but do not remember why I stopped.

There is something I remember as clear as day from my childhood that maybe influences me somewhat.  Funny how you can remember the silliest things, but the more important things are just whispers of thoughts.  My brother and his friends were playing marbles in our street.  Marbles was a big deal back then….you wanted to collect the best ones, the most unique ones and the prettiest cat’s eyes!

Our house was on a dirt road that was also a dead end so kids could play marbles right in the street with little worry about any car traffic!  The boys were out there often playing!

One day I was my innocent little self sitting out and watching the boys play.  One of them shouted “Gxx Dxxx Sxx of a Bxxxx” — guess he made a bad shot.  Not sure if that was my brother, or one of his friends.  But I saw the excitement that uttered phrase brought to this group, that I, sitting there every so ladylike, decided to repeat the same phrase!!  Those boys all turned to me in unison and yelled at me never to say that again!!  I was shocked — it seemed ok for them to say it!!

Later that night my brother and I were sitting in the living room on an old “davenport” 🙂 (couch, sofa) — I can see it plain as day….similar to one of these…

And I know my imagination is real because I can even picture the old piano right across from the davenport!

So my brother sat next to me on the couch and was very serious.  He said I could never, ever, never repeat that phrase I heard those boys utter.  And if I did, God would strike me dead by lightning!!!  Can you imagine the look on my face??

And I know without a doubt there was a horrific thunderstorm going on that night and I was petrified!!

So I am thinking this whole childhood scare tactic is really the underlying reason why “Dirty Dog” or “Bless Your Heart” are usually the extent of my swear words!!  Now my brother, who probably does not read my blog, may take exception to this childhood memory of mine, but it is my story and I am sticking to it!!!

In one of the windows in our kitchen I have placed the blue glass pieces that we got from my sister-in-laws house after she passed away and her sons were putting the house up for sale.  I picked this window because the sun always comes up in the morning in this window.  This morning one of the pieces really caught the sun just right!

Between reading and diamond painting, I have been trying to keep my sanity as I am sure everyone is.   (These are just the book-books — I also have a book always going on my Nook!!  My mom would be proud!!)

And since it is Random Thoughts Friday, how about some Random pictures to finish out this blog!!

Stay safe and healthy!
