Geese and Squirrels

One of my favorite things to do while we are still at our Big Lake place is sit on the deck and read. This time of year when people are starting to close up to head to their winter homes, it is quieter than usual. But with the big oak tree next to our deck each day the deck gets more and more acorns on it! Now they fall so often, I almost think I need a bike helmet to protect my head as they are so noisy when they fall, it would seem like it would hurt if it hit directly on the top of my head!! That is all I need…stitches in the head from a falling acorn! Every day we have to blow off the deck and the next day…it is covered again!

So yesterday I was sitting there and a couple flocks of geese flew overhead. They are always so fascinating watching their V formation and always seem to have a couple of them squawking as they fly by. After the 2 V’s came by, all of a sudden there was a lone goose, flying around squawking and going around in circles. It was like he was lost!! Like he missed the boat on the 2 V’s that had already set out. He made 2 big circles squawking the whole time and then I never saw him along again. It was like the lone kid out on the playground with no one to play with!! …sad… I can only hope that he finally found his V to belong to.

Then, let’s talk about those crazy squirrels. Of course with oak trees comes acorns, and with acorns, comes squirrels. When I am sitting below the tree they often come up in the branches and taunt me with their little squirrely taunting noise. You know the noise…where you know they are ticked off!! But hey, this is my house!! I will yell “get” to them and sometimes that helps…for a few minutes…and then they get back.

Their most annoying habit is that they bury their acorns in our front yard. So it looks like our front yard had a bad big hole aerating job done. So bury your nuts, but then cover your holes!!! I googled wondering how in the world they find their acorns in the winter. And according to Google, they lick the nuts so they can find their own scent. David said, well we should show them and go out there in the holes, grab the nuts and lick them so they can’t find them in the winter!! Probably not…my luck I would get acorn poisoning and will be off to the ER or Urgent Care. 🙂

The Big Lake place will only be open until October 15th, so the season is coming to a close. I wrote up the last newsletter issue for the year and am waiting to get that back from the publishers. Last weekend they blew out our sprinklers, another sign that the season is coming to an end.

Start those Vikings fans early!!!

Well have a great rest of the week!

Take care!!!
