Hawk’s Cay

We had stayed at Hawk’s Cay after Jackie and Jermar’s wedding many years ago so wanted to go back since we enjoyed it so much back then. I don’t think we would go back again, especially after we have already stayed in some great places. I think it has kind of turned in to a noity-toity type of place….LOL….everything was so expensive. When we checked in they said they would add $200/day for incidentals, which all hotels seem to do now. I thought 200 seems like a lot. Until we went to the outside tiki bar the first night and each had a drink (mine being wine out of a can….LOL) and chicken wings and the total came to almost $90 I think I understood why the $200 a day.

Our place was nice though. We were in what they call a “king cabana” which meant a basic hotel room with a doubled deck off the end. Very nice for sitting out and we were right off of the adult pool and hot tub which was handy to have close.

Oh my goodness me reading again!! I did do other things too, but will say I think I have already read 7 books so may have to find a used book store!!

Big pool area…kids can be in this one, not the adult one…only thing all the pools close at sunset which just seemed too bad that they could not be enjoyed later in the evening.

Also have this lagoon where people can swim if they want, but great places to sit around it with a fully sandy area.

Me, my cane and my sun hat!!!!

Adult pool area!

This guy decided to climb the steps on the cabana next to ours…and just wander on through. I would probably have screamed if he came up our steps! Sorry Jackie I could not catch him to bring him home to you!

The 2nd to last night there I booked a sunset cruise for us. The description did say it was wheelchair accessible, not that I need that complete type of accessibility but I need to be able to step down with my cane….I can’t simply jump down. We got there ahead of time and were waiting when the captain came up and said since they only had 6 people there were going to take the smaller boat which looked very nice, but one has to step down into it and I knew I would not be able to do that seamlessly. Talked to the captain and told him we thought it was going to be on the catamaran, but he said they take the smaller boat if not enough people. He was so nice and completely understood. So we said we would skip it and hopefully the next night there would be a chance that more people would sign up so they would use the bigger boat.

The Bigger boat!!!

The next afternoon the Captain (Captain Miguel) texted me and asked if we would be interested in taking the tour that night…he said he was checking with ownership to see if he could take out the bigger boat. He still only had 6 passengers but wanted to see if he could accommodate us. That was soooo nice!! And yes the ownership agreed and with 2 other couples…one from Rochester, MN (she works at Mayo!!) and the others from Jacksonville, FL, along with first mate, Connor, we set out on the trip and it was truly amazing!! We did get to see dolphins and also the boat went alongside a Spotted Eagle Ray which was so crazy!! I could not get a picture of him fast enough but googled it and this is what I got, which was exactly what he looked like! AMAZING!!

We got some great sunset pictures….while the Captain played “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down” by Elton John while we all quietly enjoyed the sinking sun!

Us with Captain Miguel (Master Captain, I should say)

First mate Connor…he knew so much about the area and the waters. Showed us lobster traps there were in the water and knew a lot of history. I thought for sure he wanted to be a captain too, but he said he is going to Firefighter/EMT school and since they don’t really have many fires, he would probably be doing EMT more than anything.

That was such a great part of our stay at Hawk’s Cay!!! I was so glad that we decided to do it. Both Captain Miguel and First Mate Connor were so delightful and knew the real definition of “great customer service”!! It was great to have that experience with them and I told them so…most of the staff seems kind of cranky, except for one bellman and one desk person so it was great to see both of them so positive. Captain said he is good friends with the general manager so was going to pass that on. I said maybe the staff is just not in the vacation spirit and it takes time for most guests to be there. 🙂

Oh and here is a story you will enjoy. We went to check out and all was good. We had our bags on the luggage cart and the bellman was helping us and David went to get the Tesla. Then the Front Desk person says “Ms Anderson?” I thought oh no our credit card was declined….LOL…she said “we have that you are not checking out until tomorrow!!” Oh my!!! So I called David and he came back over and we decided what to do. Asked if we would get a refund if we still checked out and they said for sure. Since it was a 6 hour drive to our next stay we decided we would go ahead and check out and drive half way. What a dork I am!!! We were glad we did the next hotel was great, nice restaurant and good staff and it was a much better drive.

Our next stop is Merritt Island which is where we are now. I am on the deck on the iPad updating the blog. This is really a nice place and last night we got up at 2am so we could watch a SpaceX launch.

More about that in the next one!

Take care!
